World Bank: ALOM's locations are optimal
The World Bank published its 2010 Logistics Performance Index (http://info.worldbank.org/etools/tradesurvey/mode1b.asp). Two countries with ALOM partner locations scored number 1 and 2: Germany scored Number One on the list worldwide. With ALOM's European partner location in the Number One logistics location in the world, the European market is well served. Singapore scored Number Two. With ALOM's Asian partner location headquartered in Singapore, the Asian market, too, is serviced from an optimum location.
While there may be per-unit cost savings in production cost to locate in one of the less desirable locations, frequently the total cost will be too high, when including logistics cost as well as management and delays in getting product to market.
The US - the location of ALOM's headquarters - scored Number 15 on the list. The lower number is due to customs clearance issues and ease of arranging competitively priced shipment. This is why services provided by ALOM regarding US import and export are so important to our customers.

Our freight bill: $3.5 trillion dollars - but wait: There is additional cost
Datamonitor just published a new study showing that the current value of the global and express market is approximately US$3.5 trillion. By 2013, this figure is expected to reach US$4 trillion, mainly because of growth in Asia, BRIC and the Middle East. Two areas are driving the industry development: Cost and sustainability.
Reality is that the freight bill carries with it an additional cost: Impact on the environment. When this cost is factored in, some of the locations boasting cheap-unit-cost may not look so favorable. True eco-logistics costs take into account both the economics and the ecological aspects of the supply chain. Yes, the supply chain just got more complex. Yet it also got more sustainable in more than one respect.

Volcano eruptions and supply chain disruptions
The media spent the last four days considering the implications of the Islandic volcano eruptions for air travel: Stranded passengers, grounded planes and losses for the airlines. In the meantime, supply chain professionals worldwide were contemplating their supply chain. We try to develop scenarios for how to keep our increasingly complex supply chain flow going. Yet how do you plan for air traffic for an entire continent being cut off? With resilience and resourceful management from supply chain executives, the impact on world trade will be minimal. Overreliance on air transportation of goods can be expensive and - as we now see - not so reliable. As the disruption is dragging on, we are thankful for our central European partner location that allows us to reach throughout Europe using ground transportation.
